Zofia Monica Germanowicz, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and sister passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 21, 2018, at the age of 100. She was born in Zarszyn, Poland on January 31, 1918, the youngest of five children born to the late Wawrzyniec and Rozalia (Michalski) Malek. Zofia was a survivor of the Russian concentration camps during the Russian occupation of Poland in WWII. After being released from a camp, she signed up for the Polish Army in Iran, under the command of General Anders. She served in the British 8th Army, 2nd Polish Corp. in the Middle East and Italy. Zofia was awarded the “Cross of Merit with Sword” for her service delivering supplies to the front lines. While in the army, Zofia met the love of her life, Victor Germanowicz, also in the military. They were married in Cairo, Egypt in 1944. Being unable to return to Poland at the end of WWII, Zofia and Victor moved to England, then Argentina and Brazil before coming to America in 1960. Zofia was a parishioner of Holy Name of Jesus Church in Stamford, CT for 58 years and belonged to the Rosary Society and the Senior Circle. She was the Grand Marshall of the Pulaski Day Parade in NYC representing Holy Name Parish in 2014. Zofia worked for Pitney Bowes as a meter inspector and was a member of the Pitney Bowes “Golden Oldies” Club. Zofia loved her family unconditionally and enjoyed making the holidays a time to remember especially Christmas Eve. She was predeceased by her husband, Victor. They were married for 66 years at the time of his passing. She is survived by her son, Andrew (Jean) Germanowicz of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, daughter, Martha (Charles) Coleman of New Canaan, CT, grandchildren, Jeanine Germanowicz of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Alexis Coleman of New Canaan, CT and Natalie (Andrew) Merelis of the Bronx, NY, and her two great-grandchildren, Theodore and Isabel Merelis. Always giving, selfless and loving, she was an inspiration and a role model for us all. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 27 at 11:00am at Holy Name of Jesus Church, 4 Pulaski St, Stamford. Interment will follow at Queen of Peace RC Cemetery, 124 Rock Rimmon Rd. Stamford.
