Blanca Matos

Blanca Ofelia Nieves Matos, a woman of profound faith, boundless generosity, and a "world-class" sense of humor, passed away surrounded by the love of the family she spent her life nurturing. Born on February 27, 1939, in San Sebastian, Puerto Rico, Blanca migrated to Stamford, Connecticut, in March of 1970. Over the next five decades, she became a pillar of her community, known for an altruistic heart that truly "never met a stranger." A devout Christian, Blanca’s life was a testament to her love for Christ. Her former Pastor Garcia often compared her to the biblical figure Tabitha, a woman known for her selfless and charitable works. Within her church, Blanca was a force of nature who served as a Deacon, Elder, and President of the Woman’s Group. She was the undisputed Head Chef of the church kitchen, possessing a remarkable, almost miraculous ability to stretch a meal to feed whoever happened to walk through the door. But perhaps nothing captured Blanca’s spirited nature better than the sight of her smiling behind the wheel of a church bus. Standing at just 4’10”, she was immensely proud of the CDL she earned, and she delighted in the look of pure shock on people's faces when they realized the "tiny little lady" was the one expertly maneuvering the giant bus down the road. Her calling to help others extended far beyond the church walls. Blanca spent much of her time visiting nursing homes, caring for the elderly with such natural grace that staff and visitors frequently mistook her for an employee. To those who knew her best, Blanca was "Snow White." She possessed an immense love for nature, finding peace among her flowers, plants, and animals. She was famously seen feeding the birds from her window, who seemed to light up in her presence just as people did. She was quick-witted and comedic, often bringing laughter to those around her—sometimes through her self-proclaimed status as a world-class singer. Blanca was predeceased by her son, Manuel Alicea; her first-born grandson, Freddy Lopez and her best friend and sister, Nina Lopez. Blanca is survived by her husband Felipe Matos and her legacy of love continues through her five daughters, Dulcinia Velez, Wanda Lopez, Nancy Alicea, Carmen Julia Gonzalez, and Marisol Alicea; and Jose Domingo Alicea, whom she loved as her own. She remains the heartbeat of a massive family tree, including 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild on the way. While her presence will be missed by the countless friends, she considered family, we take comfort in knowing she is reunited in heaven with loved ones. Her face lit up every time she greeted a friend on earth; we can only imagine the light she brings to her new home. Visitation will be from 4pm to 8pm on Thursday January 29th, at Bosak Funeral Home, 453 Shippan Avenue, Stamford, CT. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, January 30th at 10am at Pentecostal Mission John 3:16 Church, 132 Glenbrook Road, Stamford, CT. Interment will follow at Woodland Cemetery, 66 Woodland Place, Stamford CT. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
